Art, design, and the theatre and creative industries have long been my key interests in life, and have led me to pursue and develop a career as an artist and designer. I work predominantly as a freelance artist and designer within the theatre industry, with my key interests and talents being set design, scenic art, props and construction. My skills within the theatre industry have been developed through my studies in Theatre Design at University, and complemented through my extensive experience in my professional career as an artist and designer to date.
Early in my career and training I worked in craft design, acquiring and developing skills in ceramics, 3D sculpture and textiles. The skills and experience that I gained in these areas from my studies and from producing and selling my work professionally has enabled me to further develop my skill set as an artist and designer.
I have always been keen to gain experience and skills in all of the various aspects of the creative and theatre industries. I have worked for many theatre companies in both the United Kingdom and Australia as a lighting technician and member of the stage crew, as well as producing lighting designs for small production companies. I enjoyed working in these roles, as it provided me with insight into another side of the theatre industry, and has enabled me to further develop as a designer with a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the theatre industry.
As a designer, I enjoy incorporating my experiences and understandings of cultural and natural landscapes and objects into my designs, so as to reflect a unique perspective.
An artistic technique which I have particular interest in using in the production of my work is objet trouve. This art form takes objects and gives them another personality and purpose. In the near future, I would like to take this interest one step further and incorporate this with my interest to live and work sustainably. Through my partner’s career in the fields of climate change and sustainability, I have become interested in learning how the theatre and creative industries impact on the environment, and what measures can be taken to ensure these can be minimised. As an artist and designer, I am keen to ensure that the decisions that I make and work that I produce are compatible with my ideals.
Outside of my career, I have interests in photography and travel, both of which have taken me to many different places and enabled me to see and experience different cultures. Through my travels experience working overseas I have been able to strengthen my knowledge and skills in various art forms and designs, as well as enrich my life with new and different experiences which have assisted me to grow as an artist and designer.
